The Targaryen dynasty is at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins when King Viserys breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. House of the Dragon, produced by HBO in association with Bastard Sword and 1:26 Pictures, premiered on August 21, 2022. Set well before the events of Game of Thrones, it returns to the world George R.R. Martin built — the continents of Westeros and Essos, the Iron Throne, the Targaryen dynasty — but locates itself at an earlier and, by the show's own account, more dragonrich moment in that history. Where Game of Thrones depicted a world in which dragons were long extinct and then gradually, improbably reborn, House of the Dragon opens with more than fifteen of the creatures already under Targaryen control. The dynasty is not struggling to survive. It is, for the moment, the unchallenged center of the known world.
