The Spanish crime series Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine — known in its original language as Berlín y la dama del armiño — arrives on Netflix on May 15, 2026. Produced by Vancouver Media, the show runs for a single season of eight episodes and is filmed in Spanish, the original language of its parent franchise.
Berlin, as a character, has operated in the background of European heist television for years before stepping forward as a lead. He is a figure carried over from the Spanish phenomenon La Casa de Papel, known internationally as Money Heist, the series that made Vancouver Media and Netflix's collaboration in Spain one of the more commercially significant relationships in European streaming. A spinoff centered on Berlin specifically, simply titled Berlín, launched that character in his own standalone world, and Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine appears to follow from that foundation — extending whatever universe and tone that earlier spinoff established rather than resetting it.
The premise announced for this season is precise and deliberately theatrical: Berlin summons his gang to Seville and constructs a heist designed to steal a Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece — specifically Lady with an Ermine, one of da Vinci's four surviving portraits and a painting with a long and complicated history of displacement, war, and repatriation, currently housed in Kraków, Poland. The target here is not the painting itself in its real-world resting place, but rather a fictional duke in Seville whom the show positions as a mark — a figure ambitious enough, and presumably corrupt enough, to make him the appropriate victim of his own scheme turned back on him. The structural conceit, in which the heist gang uses the duke's own greed as the mechanism of the theft, is a familiar template in caper storytelling: the con within the con, the mark who believes he is a collaborator until he isn't. What distinguishes the setup here is the particular cultural weight of the da Vinci painting as the object of desire. Choosing Lady with an Ermine — a portrait with actual geopolitical resonance and recognized global fame — rather than a fictional artwork signals an intention to anchor the fantastical mechanics of a heist in something that feels materially real and historically loaded.
Seville as a setting is worth noting. The shift in location from the Madrid-anchored Money Heist universe to Seville — Andalusia, the south of Spain, a city with its own distinct architectural and cultural identity — suggests the production is interested in giving this chapter a visual character separated from what came before. Whether that means the series uses the city's geography as an active element of the plot, or whether Seville functions primarily as atmosphere, is not yet clear from what's been made public.
What the marketing has not illuminated is the composition of the gang Berlin summons. The ensemble dynamic has always been central to how these Vancouver Media productions function — the friction between personalities, the question of loyalty and betrayal within a crew that is never entirely stable. Eight episodes provides enough space for character work, but it also means the show has to balance the procedural pleasures of a heist narrative (the planning stages, the complications, the reversals) against genuine character development within a contained run. How much of this season is devoted to the mechanics of the theft itself versus the internal relationships of the people executing it remains to be seen.
There is also the question of tone. The genre tags associated with the series — drama, crime, action-adventure, and comedy — span a range wide enough to suggest a show that doesn't commit cleanly to any single register. Berlin as a character has historically been written with a certain operatic self-regard, a man who treats crime as aesthetic practice and himself as a figure of some tragic grandeur. That quality lends itself to comedy as much as to drama, depending on how the writing handles the distance between his self-image and reality. Whether Lady with an Ermine plays that tension dryly, as dark comedy, or whether it leans toward the more earnest action-thriller mode that Money Heist periodically employed, is something the episode structure alone cannot answer.
The early TMDB voting, limited as it is at 69 votes, places the average at 8.3 out of 10. That number carries very little statistical weight at this stage, but it at least suggests that whatever audience has encountered preview material or early access has not been hostile to what they've seen. It tells almost nothing about what a general audience will make of it.
The audience most likely to seek this out divides into two overlapping groups: viewers who followed Money Heist through its full run and have maintained an interest in the extended universe Vancouver Media continues to build around it, and Spanish-language drama subscribers on Netflix who have made that platform's Iberian productions — crime procedurals especially — a consistent part of their watching. For both groups, the da Vinci premise and the Seville setting offer enough novelty to distinguish this season from what preceded it, while the returning character keeps the entry point familiar.
