Forza Horizon 6, developed by Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios, is scheduled for release on May 19, 2026, on PC and Xbox Series X.
The Horizon series has occupied a specific and durable lane within racing games since its debut — an open-world offshoot of the longer-running Forza Motorsport line, distinguished by its emphasis on roaming festival environments rather than closed circuits. Where Motorsport concerns itself with lap times and car tuning at recognizable racetracks, Horizon has always been organized around a looser premise: a fictional music-and-motorsport festival dropped into a real-world location, and the freedom to drive across that landscape largely as the player sees fit. The series has rotated through Colorado, Southern Europe, Australia, Britain, and Mexico across its five previous entries, with each setting serving as both a visual showcase and a loose structural hook.
Forza Horizon 5, the direct predecessor, was set in Mexico and released in 2021. It was among the highest-profile Xbox exclusives of that period and arrived on Xbox Game Pass alongside its retail launch, a distribution approach that dramatically expanded its audience relative to a traditional paid release. Whether Horizon 6 will follow a similar distribution model has not been confirmed in the available data.
Playground Games, the British studio behind every Horizon entry, has maintained a consistent development cadence across the franchise, though gaps between releases have varied. The studio is also known for the Fable reboot, which has been in development in parallel — a fact that raises straightforward questions about studio bandwidth and which project has commanded the larger portion of internal resources in recent years. None of that is answered by what's currently available.
The most conspicuous absence in everything known about Horizon 6 at this stage is the setting. Location has functioned as the primary marketing reveal for each entry in the series, and the destination shapes almost every aspect of what a Horizon game feels like to play — the road density, the terrain variety, the visual palette, the weather systems, the mix of on- and off-road events. That information is not yet public, which means the game's central identity remains opaque in a way that would not be true of most sequels in a long-running franchise.
Platform availability is confirmed for PC and Xbox Series X, with no mention of Xbox Series S, PlayStation platforms, or Nintendo hardware. The absence of Series S from the confirmed list is worth noting given that Horizon 5 did support that platform; whether that represents an omission in the current data or a deliberate narrowing of scope is unclear.
The May 2026 release window places the game in a historically competitive retail period. Spring releases from major publishers often aim to occupy space before the crowded autumn window, though May in particular has become a more contested month as studios have moved away from the near-universal holiday launch strategy that defined the previous console generation.
Readers likely to track this release most closely are existing Forza Horizon players — a community that skews toward car enthusiasts but has broadened considerably under the franchise's increasingly accessible design philosophy — as well as Xbox and PC players who follow the Game Studios publishing slate. Given the confirmed platform list, the game is unlikely to reach players outside the Microsoft ecosystem at launch.
