Tears of the Lonely Army of the Golden Triangle opens in theaters on August 15, 2026. The documentary examines the fate of a Republic of China military unit that crossed into the borderlands where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos converge following the conclusion of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. This territory, long known as the Golden Triangle, was once a source of gold and gemstones but had become a lawless frontier shaped by decades of conflict and the drug trade. Under General Li Mi, the unit — formally designated the Yunnan Anti-Communist National Salvation Army — expanded from a small remnant force into a several-thousand-strong presence, yet remained cut off from the government it had served, stranded in the jungle and effectively forgotten. The film traces how that isolation defined the soldiers and the territory they occupied.
