Butcher: Invisible Wounds

Butcher: Invisible Wounds is a feature-length documentary scheduled to air on ITV on 9 June 2026. The film examines two distinct threads: Terry Butcher's career as one of England's most capped footballers, and the personal loss he suffered following the death of his son Chris, a British Army veteran who died after experiencing severe PTSD.

Butcher earned 77 caps for England, captaining the side on seven occasions. Among the most recognisable images in English football history is Butcher continuing to play with a blood-soaked bandage around his head during a 1989 World Cup qualifier against Sweden. His club career included trophy-winning periods at Ipswich Town and Glasgow Rangers.

The documentary's second strand addresses the death of his son Chris, whose struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder following military service form the basis of the film's title. The phrase "invisible wounds" refers to the psychological injuries sustained by armed forces veterans.
