Clayface earned $10.4 million in its second weekend, down 57% from its $24 million opening, according to The Numbers. It has $44.1 million domestically after 10 days and about $83 million worldwide, per Wikipedia, with a reported budget of $30 to $44 million.
Our CinemaScore explainer said its A− still had to be tested by the second weekend. Here is the result.
The Weekend
Per The Numbers' chart for the weekend of October 30:
| Rank | Film | Weekend | Change | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | You Can See Everything | $10.6M | −43% | $63.9M |
| 2 | Clayface | $10.4M | −57% | $44.1M |
| 3 | Wildwood | $7.5M | −39% | $25.9M |
| 4 | Wicker | $4.1M | −28% | $13.3M |
| 5 | Street Fighter | $3.2M | −63% | $53.0M |
The documentary You Can See Everything took first place by about $200,000 in its third weekend. The Numbers does not label these figures as estimates, but several are round numbers and may change when Monday's actuals arrive. Wicker, which opened a week before Clayface, fell only 28% to $13.3 million total, a smaller drop than Clayface's. We do not have a CinemaScore for it, so it is not in the comparison below.
How the Drop Compares
Here is each film's second weekend against the audience grade it earned on opening night. We covered the first seven in our explainer on CinemaScore.
| Film | CinemaScore | Second-weekend change |
|---|---|---|
| Obsession | A− | +39% |
| Wildwood | A | −39% |
| Clayface | A− | −57% |
| Resident Evil | B+ | −61% |
| Verity | C+ | −63% |
| Other Mommy | D+ | −70% |
| Scream 7 | B− | −74% |
Two notes on the table. Wildwood's −39% appears to be measured against a base that includes its Thursday previews ($12.3 million). Against its $11.0 million weekend alone, the drop is about 32%. And the films are not equals. They opened in different weeks against different competition.
With those caveats, the order is mostly what the grades suggest. The A and A− films held best, Resident Evil's B+ came next, and the C+ and D+ films fell the most. Scream 7 is the exception we flagged: a B− with the steepest drop of the group, which fits the front-loaded pattern franchise sequels often show.
Clayface's 57% sits where an A− would put it: worse than the two best-received films, better than every other film in the table.
Where It Stands
- Domestic: $44.1 million after 10 days.
- Worldwide: about $83 million, of which $38.9 million is international.
- Reviews: 77% on Rotten Tomatoes from 206 reviews and 59 on Metacritic from 45 critics, per Wikipedia.
- Budget: $30 to $44 million. At the high end that is about 1.9 times the budget in worldwide gross so far, and at the low end about 2.8 times, before theaters' share and marketing.
Its run is not over, and we will not forecast a final total.
Editorial Take: This is the clearest test of the audience-grade idea we have had this fall, and it mostly held. A good grade did not make Clayface a leggy film, it made it a film that fell less than average and less than the weaker-received ones. That is a smaller claim than "audience grades predict box office," and it is the one the data supports. The next test is how it holds against Godzilla Minus Zero and Wild Horse Nine on November 6, and then The Hunger Games on November 20.
