The Diary of a Chambermaid

The Diary of a Chambermaid (Journal d'une femme de chambre) is a French-language film set for release on May 15, 2026. The story centers on a young Romanian woman who has taken a domestic position with a French family and becomes involved with an amateur theater group preparing a stage adaptation of Octave Mirbeau's novel of the same name, first published in 1900. Mirbeau's source novel, a darkly satirical account of a chambermaid navigating bourgeois French society, has previously been adapted for the screen by Jean Renoir in 1946 and Luis Buñuel in 1964. This production approaches the material through the frame of amateur theatrical rehearsal.
