Five Years After the Reveal, Marvel's Wolverine Is Arriving September 15

By Incoming Editorial Team · August 20, 2026

Marvel's Wolverine — PS5 exclusive from Insomniac Games

Marvel's Wolverine arrives on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026 — twenty-six days from now.

Insomniac Games has spent eight years building the most critically acclaimed superhero game series of this generation. Three Spider-Man games. Three critically acclaimed releases. Now they bring Marvel's Wolverine to the same universe — and for the first time, they get to go M-rated.

That single detail changes everything about what is incoming.

Why This Is the Most Anticipated Game of the Year

Insomniac's Spider-Man games succeeded because they understood their character — the swing, the quip, the responsibility. Every mechanical choice served who Peter Parker is.

Wolverine demands something different: rage, pain, and the violence of a man who cannot die but has been made to suffer. The studio that mastered the web-swing now has to master the berserker.

At The Game Awards 2025, Marvel's Wolverine was nominated for Most Anticipated Game — alongside Grand Theft Auto VI, The Witcher IV, and Resident Evil Requiem. The company it keeps says everything about where the hype sits.

What makes this one of the most anticipated incoming releases on the PS5 calendar is exactly that tension. Insomniac has never built for an M-rated character before. The constraint is gone. The claws are out.

What Is Marvel's Wolverine?

Marvel's Wolverine is a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is a PS5 exclusive — not coming to PS4, not coming to PC at launch.

The game is set in the same universe as Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man series and shares its continuity, but it is entirely standalone. No knowledge of the Spider-Man games is required. Logan's story is its own.

Liam McIntyre — known internationally for Spartacus — voices Logan/Wolverine.

The Story: Team X, the Reavers, and Bolivar Trask

The incoming story centers on mutant persecution. Logan rejoins Team X, a mutant task force, after a series of mutants begin disappearing. They are being hunted and captured by the Reavers — a cybernetically enhanced mercenary group — and delivered to Bolivar Trask, a wealthy industrialist who believes mutants represent an existential threat to humanity.

As Logan cuts through the mystery, the game also pulls at the threads of his past — the fragmented memories, the lost years, the question of who he was before Weapon X.

Jean Grey has a significant role in the incoming story. She is confirmed as a telekinetic mutant and an emerging leader among those being hunted — not a damsel, but a force who shapes the direction of the narrative.

Also incoming to the conflict: the Hand, the ancient ninja order that has crossed paths with Logan across decades of comics.

The Rage Mechanic: Why This Is the Right Way to Play Wolverine

Every successful attack, parry, and kill builds Logan's Rage. That meter does three things:

  • Stronger attacks — Rage-powered strikes deal significantly more damage
  • Healing Factor — Logan's signature regeneration is tied to Rage; burn it to survive grievous damage
  • Rage Tier 3 — If Rage maxes out, Logan enters a full berserker state — the screen shifts to a stark, desaturated "Black, White & Blood" comic-style palette with red highlights, and he can tear through enemies with brutal executions

This is not a generic combo system. The Rage mechanic makes the gameplay loop a direct translation of who Wolverine is: the harder you fight, the more you hurt, and the more dangerous you become. The Healing Factor as a resource rather than a passive regeneration creates genuine tension — Logan can survive almost anything, but not everything, and the player has to manage that.

Editorial take: Tying Logan's Healing Factor to an active resource rather than passive regeneration forces players into high-risk aggression — capturing the volatile rhythm of Wolverine's combat lore far better than a standard health bar ever could.

The game also features Techniques (named special moves including Tornado Spin and Bull Rush) and Critical Strikes — devastating finishing moves that can be executed mid-combat.

The game is not open world. It is a narrative-driven, linear-to-semi-linear experience — the same structural approach Insomniac used for Spider-Man and Miles Morales.

Who's in the Game

Confirmed characters incoming to Marvel's Wolverine:

Character Role
Logan / Wolverine Protagonist
Jean Grey Ally, telekinetic, emerging leader
Sabretooth Confirmed presence
Mystique Confirmed presence
Omega Red Villain
Lady Deathstrike Villain
Bolivar Trask Primary antagonist
The Reavers Antagonist faction
The Hand Antagonist faction

Same Universe as Spider-Man — But Standalone

Marvel's Wolverine is set in the same continuity as Insomniac's Spider-Man games. The developers have confirmed there will be Easter egg-level references to that shared world, but no crossover — Peter Parker is not incoming to this story.

The decision is the right one. Logan's universe is X-Men: mutant persecution, Team X, Weapon X. Folding Spider-Man into that would dilute both.
