Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Review — How Thirty People Won Everything

By Incoming Editorial Team · August 22, 2026

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — Sandfall Interactive, 2025

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG where every attack, dodge, and parry is a real-time input — miss the timing and a menu-select action fails just as hard as it would in an action game. It's the debut title from a 30-person French studio, and it holds a 92 Metacritic score on PS5, a 98% recommendation rate on OpenCritic, and nine Game Awards wins from a record thirteen nominations.

Critical reception is about as close to unanimous as gaming gets. It is not completely unanimous — a minority of reviewers found the ~30-hour story "too slight" for its runtime, and one flagged the game's world as "let down by its emphasis on combat." Both points are worth knowing before you commit the time. Here's what the game actually plays like, what's genuinely excellent about it, and where reviewers found real friction.

The Combat

The core loop is straightforward to describe and hard to master: select an action from a turn-based menu, then execute it with a real-time input. Attacks have a timing window. Incoming hits require a parry or dodge, each with its own reaction window and no on-screen prompt telling you when to press — you learn each enemy's tells by watching, the same way you'd learn a boss's pattern in an action game.

That real-time layer is what critics single out most. TheSixthAxis called it "distinctive and very satisfying," and RPGFan described the underlying system as a considerably deeper version of the Paper Mario school of RPG combat, built around gear that changes your stats when you swap it and a "Pictos" accessory system that lets the whole party share unlocked bonuses after four battles with them equipped. A shared gradient attack gauge across the party pushes you to swap characters mid-fight rather than lean on one favorite — switching isn't optional, it's how encounters are built to be solved.

The friction reviewers report is specific, not vague dissatisfaction: extended strings of enemy turns can wear you down while you're trying to parry every hit in a row, and some boss fights lean hard on trial-and-error — the fight is a genuine wall until you find the one weakness or pattern that unlocks it, at which point it clicks fast. That's a real design tradeoff, not a bug: the same precision that makes a clean parry feel great is what makes a missed one costly.

The Story and Pacing

Every year, an entity called the Paintress climbs her monolith overlooking a dark, Belle Époque-inspired France and paints a number one lower than the year before. Everyone at or above that age vanishes from existence — an event called the Gommage. This year she painted 33. The player's party is made up almost entirely of 32-year-olds: the generation being erased next if she paints one number lower, racing to reach and stop her first. The narrative follows the Dessendre family across interconnected timelines, using that structure to look at grief and mortality from more than one angle at once.

RPGFan's review — a 99/100 overall score — praised the pacing directly, writing that "every single interaction feels deliberate, with zero wasted space" across a roughly 20-30 hour runtime, and singled out the prologue as an unusually strong piece of scene-setting. That's the majority critical read. It isn't the only one: at least one review found the plot's novelty outpacing its substance, calling it "too slight and short to amount to much more" given the length invested in it. Reviewers who spent the most time with side content also flagged the lack of an in-location map as a real point of friction — it makes exploring and finding optional content more frustrating than it needs to be, to the point that TheSixthAxis said it actively discouraged them from chasing side quests.

The emotional core, for what it's worth, is a real one and not just marketing framing: while writing the script, director Guillaume Broche asked his own mother what would devastate her most. Her answer — losing a child — became the foundation for Aline Dessendre, the Paintress herself, and the grief that runs through the whole story.

The Cast

Expedition 33 assembled a voice cast that would be notable in a $200 million production, on a budget under $10 million.

Charlie Cox — known to most audiences as Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — voices Gustave, a resourceful engineer with a mechanical arm and the closest the game has to a lead protagonist. Andy Serkis (Gollum, Caesar in Planet of the Apes) voices Renoir, the game's central antagonist. Jennifer English voices Maelle, the youngest expedition member, and won Best Performance at both The Game Awards and the Golden Joystick Awards for the role. Ben Starr voices the mysterious Verso and won Best Supporting Performer at the Golden Joystick Awards.

The six playable characters:

  • Gustave (Charlie Cox) — engineer, mechanical arm, expedition leader
  • Maelle (Jennifer English) — Gustave's foster sister, the youngest member
  • Lune (Kirsty Rider) — scholar and mage
  • Sciel (Shala Nyx) — former farmer turned teacher
  • Verso (Ben Starr) — mysterious stranger with concealed motives
  • Monoco (Rich Keeble) — a Gestral creature capable of transformation

RPGFan's review also flagged a handful of concrete technical rough edges worth knowing about, not narrative ones: occasional lip-sync mismatches in minor scenes and audio bugs where music would cut out mid-combat. Neither was reported as game-breaking, and Sandfall has continued patching post-launch.

The Soundtrack

Lorien Testard composed the score. Alice Duport-Percier handled vocal composition and primary vocals.

Testard built the score around character-specific leitmotifs across varied genres — somber piano and haunting vocals for the narrative sequences, layered orchestral combat themes that change in real time as fights escalate. The soundtrack charted on Billboard's Classical Albums Chart — an unusual crossover for a video game score. It won Best Score & Music at The Game Awards 2025.

How Thirty People Made This

Guillaume Broche spent years at Ubisoft before leaving in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, to start Sandfall Interactive with producer François Meurisse and technical director Tom Guillermin — both also Ubisoft veterans. The three of them had a single goal: make the kind of high-fidelity turn-based RPG they felt AAA studios had abandoned. The studio grew to approximately 30 developers. They had no sequel to fall back on, no franchise to trade on, and one chance.

Nine Wins Out of Thirteen

At The Game Awards 2025, Expedition 33 received 13 nominations — the most in the event's history — and won 9 of them:

  1. Game of the Year
  2. Best Game Direction
  3. Best Narrative
  4. Best Art Direction
  5. Best Score & Music (Lorien Testard)
  6. Best Performance (Jennifer English as Maelle)
  7. Best Role Playing Game
  8. Best Independent Game
  9. Best Debut Indie Game

It became the first debut title in history to win Game of the Year from all five major award ceremonies: the Golden Joystick, The Game Awards, D.I.C.E., GDC, and BAFTA. Baldur's Gate 3 swept the same five ceremonies in 2023 — but Larian Studios, founded in 1996, had already shipped several games by then. Clair Obscur was Sandfall's first.

A Cultural Moment for France

When Expedition 33 crossed one million sales, French President Emmanuel Macron personally congratulated Sandfall Interactive. The Mayor of Montpellier — where the studio is based — also acknowledged the milestone publicly.

In February 2026, the development team was awarded knighthood under the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France's highest cultural honor. Sandfall Interactive is a video game studio that had made one game. The French government gave them the same distinction previously awarded to filmmakers, novelists, and composers.

The Controversy

Expedition 33 launched with a complication. Initial releases contained placeholder graphical textures generated using AI image tools — a violation of Sandfall's own stated policies. The studio acknowledged the issue and patched it within five days.

The consequence: Expedition 33 was disqualified from the "Indie Game of the Year" and "Indie Debut Game" categories at the 2025 Indie Game Awards. Both awards were reassigned. It did not affect the game's reception at any other ceremony.

The Verdict

  • Play it if: you want turn-based combat that actually demands your attention move to move, a story that mostly earns the emotional weight it's going for, and you don't mind a game that expects you to learn its systems rather than explaining everything up front.
  • Skip it or wait if: you want an open world, a forgiving difficulty curve, or in-run navigation that holds your hand — the lack of an in-location map is a real, widely-reported friction point, and some boss fights are genuine walls until you find the trick.

Expedition 33 is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass. A free post-launch content update added a new location, additional late-game bosses, and new character costumes.

The 92 Metacritic score and the nine Game Awards wins are real, and so is the friction a meaningful slice of critics reported — the missing map, the trial-and-error boss fights, the story that a few reviewers wanted more meat on. Both things are true about the same game. What isn't in dispute: a 30-person team with a fraction of a AAA budget built a combat system precise enough that missing a parry actually costs you, and a story personal enough that its director built the whole emotional core around the answer to one question he asked his mother.
